PAOLO PELLEGRINO
The winery “Carlo Pellegrino & C.” was founded in 1880 by Paolo Pellegrino, a notary with the passion for wine making, who decided to improve his wine production with his own facilities in the north-east area of Marsala.
With his son Carlo, also a notary and passionate about making wine, he started an industrial production business and in a few years (1890) it became one of the most prominent enterprises.
Carlo married a French woman, Josephine Despagne, daughter of Oscar Pierre Despagne, wine maker and distiller from Sauternais, who was hired by Casa Vinicola Pellegrino where he developed and perfected the wine production.
In 1925, Paolo Emilio Pellegrino, grandson of the founder and eldest son of Carlo and Josephine, took the helm of the company with his brother-in-law Vincenzo Alagna, a wine-making expert, and together they further perfected the quality of their products and the business organisation introducing the “Pellegrino” wines to the Italian and foreign markets. Their entrepreneurial skills allowed the “Pellegrino” business to achieve maximum recognition.
Economia Nazionale (Year 25, issue n.3/1933) published “… two excellent products that thanks to their great taste and pleasing smell have been selected by the most demanding palates…” they are “… S.O.M. (dry) and Garibaldi Dolce (sweet) Prepared with the old yeasts of those cellars.” In 1936, the size of the industrial buildings had trebled and with it the production potential, which reached a capacity of 75,000 hectolitres.
The family and company traditions continued with Benedetto Tumbarello and Pietro Alagna. Having consolidated its success and expansion, the company is one of the largest industries in the sector and has been managed with the contribution of Paola Alagna, Benuccio Renda, Caterina Tumbarello and Massimo Bellina.
Its cellars produce fine “Marsala” wines and offer a range of Marsala DOC wines made from its vineyards by carefully harvesting and pressing only the best selection of grapes in order to produce the highest quality of “Marsala” wine.
Based on different types of grapes and vines, the ageing system and the quality of the oak, it produces the following types of “Marsala” wine: Marsala Fine: “Marsala Demi-Sec”, “Marsala Ruby”. Marsala Superiore: “Marsala Oro”, “Marsala Superiore Secco”, “Marsala Garibaldi Dolce”. Marsala Vergine: “Marsala Vergine Soleras”. Marsala Extravergine: “Riserva Marsala Vintage 1962”.
