PROCOPIO MIRABELLA
P. Mirabella & Figlio”, founded by Procopio Mirabella in 1927, was among the most successful wine companies of its time. Specialising in the production of “Marsala” wine, it established itself quickly assuming a prominent position on the market.
The winery was built in town, in the Borgo Vittorio Emanuele neighbourhood (today Corso Gramsci, within Vicolo dello Stagnone), and over the years was extended more than once.
Its most prestigious “Marsala” wines include “Stravecchio Vergine Soleras Doc” and “Superiore Ambra Semisecco Doc”.
In 1938, following Procopio Mirabella’s death, the company passed on to his children Giuseppe – who died very young after the bombing on 11 May 1943 – and Giovanna, whose married name was De Bartoli, who continued to make the winery prosper.
It was a difficult time as the business was managed by administrators who were not part of the family and lacked in motivation.
In 1951, Giuseppe’s heir Giacomo Mirabella (a wine maker) joined the management and in 1961 with his sister Concetta turned the business into a public limited company and modernised it with the latest technology – equipment for must concentration, wine refrigeration and pasteurisation, and automatic bottling – and set up an extensive sales network across the European markets. As an immediate result, the winery started producing “Marsala Superiore G.D.”
In December 1995, the business had to close down due to financial difficulties.
FRANCESCO INTORCIA
The “Cantine Intorcia” winery started its production in 1930, when Francesco Intorcia, founder of “Francesco Intorcia & F.”, decided to bring to life a vision that continues to this day.
The second generation of the family, Antonio and Antonino, to give new impetus to the traditional “Marsala Doc” took a new approach and introduced new production methods carefully selecting the grapes from their arrival at the winery through to the wine ageing process, contributing to the definition of the distinctive character of their “Marsala” wine.
Under their management, the small family business turned into a modern wine production establishment.
Today, “Cantine Intorcia” continues its innovative journey with Francesco, the third generation of the Intorcia family.
In 2010, supported by his father Antonio, renewing the complexity of “Marsala” wine Francesco started the project “Heritage – Collections of Family Wines“. His mission is to promote “Marsala” wine and disprove the idea that it can only be enjoyed after meals, showing its versatility and ability to accompany complex dishes, showcasing it in Italy and abroad, explaining and pairing the wine and allowing more people to enjoy it.
