30 – D4 ROOM – THE WINE GROWER

THE WINE GROWER

This profession is of major importance at every stage in the cultivation and production of the grapes. His mission is to bring the best harvest to the winery and is, therefore, a role that requires experience and a vast range of skills regarding pest control, pruning, maintenance, harvest and much more.

The first step to obtain an excellent wine obviously begins in the vineyard!

THE AGRONOMIST

From a term of Greek origin (agròs: field/countryside; nòmos: law/rule), he studies the laws and regulations of agronomy as a science and makes sure it is applied.

The first, most important of his numerous skills is being able to identify and enhance the “Terroir”, i.e. the best environmental factors of an area in order to obtain top-quality products. He is in charge of how to cultivate a vineyard and of selecting the best, most suitable varietal clones. He selects the growing techniques to use, the planting layouts and their density. He decides on the method to work and fertilise the soil and the pruning systems. He identifies the best techniques in the fight against mycosis and parasites that attack the vine. He organises the grape harvest and the relevant techniques.

THE OENOLOGIST

An essential role in the wine making process, he is the person who physically produces the wine from the grapes to the bottle and reports it.

The oenologist collaborates closely with the wine grower and the agronomist to create a synergy that will ensure the wine production process goes smoothly right from the cultivation of the grapes. He often has the task of deciding the actual date of the harvest. He follows the wine making process in all its different stages to guarantee the end quality. The oenologist’s personal touch becomes decisive for the wine with numerous essential oenological practices.

Nowadays, even more than in the past, he is a key figure in the success of every modern wine producing company.
